This kyusu is an example of Banko-Yaki, a 300 year-old Japanese pottery style. The red Banko clay of this tea pot is supposed to react with and reduce the tannins in tea.
The pattern is achieved by wrapping the teapot in rice straws before firing. As the material burns away, it leaves unique patterns on the surface of the clay.
